April Fool’s Joke Gone Wrong? Oregon’s Douglas County to close it’s Public Libraries on April 1

The Library Journal posted an article making this chilling announcement in it’s February 2017 issue. This news should serve as a wake-up call to all U.S. librarians that the power of the dollar can defeat the ethos of public service as information professionals continue to struggle to find the metrics to prove their value as a publicly (tax-payer) supported institution. Converting the library’s social value into dollars seems increasingly important as federal funding continues to get cut and library’s must rely on their state for the necessary funds to stay afloat.
